Yasemin & Safak's puppies.
Whelped 4/7/2008.
This is the sheep hut where Yasemin gave birth to her
litter of pups. She was surrounded by her family of 20 Shetland sheep.
Yasemin
continues to be one very special and regal lady. I have always admired her
quiet dignity and strength. Yet, after all these years with us, she continues to
take me by surprise in her own special way.
She was due to whelp Wed.-Sat. and
I checked her for signs of whelping with each passing day. Yasemin did not
want to stay in the barn would look at me with an expression that told me she
wanted to spend each day out with her Shetland sheep performing her duty as
guardian.
The evening of 4/6/08 I checked her over very carefully
and she showed no signs of impending whelping. So, I told her this would
be the last night out with the sheep and then she needed to stay in the barn
until her pups were ready to follow their mom to guard duty.
The
following morning I went out to check on everything and her daughter Inca came
to the gate. But, no Yasemin. Oh goodness, I thought. She's
done it.
I went to the sheep hut and sure enough there she was. I saw
the 20 Shetlands in the hut and in the far corner there was Yasemin. I
heard the sounds of little puppies.
Yasemin had whelped her litter right in
with the sheep. They had not stepped on her or her puppies. She was
as happy as could be right there in familiar surroundings.
Mom and pups were
pulled to the barn for a day. They were then brought to the house for
close observation since major storms are coming through.
