Managing Breeds for a Secure Future

By Phillip Sponenberg & Donald E. Bixby

This is one of my favorite books.  It is an excellent resource and can be easily applied to the preservation of the Kangal Dog breed.  Managing Breeds for a Secure Future may be purchased from The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy.

The Great Lakes Kangal Club is a club dedicated to the preservation of the working Kangal dog.  Managing Breeds is recommended reading for all members of the Great Lakes Kangal Club & has been featured in the Club's Newsletter published the first of March 2008.

This excellent resource tackles the challenges of maintaining genetic diversity.  It is a theoretical exposition as well as a user's guide.  It examines conservation issues and provides practical approaches for developing successful strategies for securing both standardized breeds and landraces.

Managing breeds provides useful information for all levels of breeders.  The key points are emphasized and there are examples given that are helpful to beginners.  There are techniques & strategies for master breeders.

The book also addresses complexities of political and human aspects of saving rare breeds.  Possible obstacles as well as pitfalls for Associations are discussed.  Breed association leaders & members will find this book an excellent resource.

The RBST is a conservation charity whose purpose is to secure the continued existence and viability of the United Kingdom’s Native Farm Animal Genetic Resources (FAnGR).

This Canine Genetics Discussion Group is a continuation from Dr. John Armstrong's Canine Diversity Group.  The Diversity project attempts to inform breeders of domesticated dogs of the dangers of inbreeding and overuse of popular sires.  To do so leads to the loss of genetic diversity & increases the frequency of genetic problems in the breed population.

My particular interest in this group is that competent knowledge and breeding practices can be applied to the preservation of our rare breed of dog - the Turkish Kangal.  This noble breed of dog is worthy of preservation & protection.  Breeders must be careful as man has shaped over time the dog to fit his own needs.  The working Kangal needs to be preserved so that it continues to perform it's original function.

Breeders can help by being informed about basic genetic principles and good breeding practices.  Know the major genetic diseases in your particular breed.  Be aware of the attitude & practices of your Breed Club.
