Kangal Enthusiasts

This Kangal message board is a privately owned, invitation only board.  The group is dedicated to sharing the common interest of living with, preserving, and promoting this rare and magnificent breed of dog.  The purpose has been to provide a gathering place for Kangal Enthusiasts.

It is a list for people who own, or are contemplating owing Kangal Dogs which are livestock guardians, companion dogs, therapy dogs, show dogs, tracking dogs, etc.  The list also welcomes those who are trying to find out more about this wonderful and highly intelligent breed of dog.

A USER FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT is provided where members of the list can gather to learn, chat, share ideas & photos, and take an active part in the lives of each others dogs.  It is a safe place to where members can feel comfortable asking the simplest questions.

In order to maintain this user friendly environment, folks requesting membership are closely screened before being added.  If this sounds like the group you have been looking for, then welcome!  If you are interest in possible membership to this group please e-mail your request.

This Canine Genetics Discussion Group is a continuation from Dr. John Armstrong's Canine Diversity Group.  The Diversity project attempts to inform breeders of domesticated dogs of the dangers of inbreeding and overuse of popular sires.  To do so leads to the loss of genetic diversity & increases the frequency of genetic problems in the breed population.

My particular interest in this group is that competent knowledge and breeding practices can be applied to the preservation of our rare breed of dog - the Turkish Kangal.  This noble breed of dog is worthy of preservation & protection.  Breeders must be careful as man has shaped over time the dog to fit his own needs.  The working Kangal needs to be preserved so that it continues to perform it's original function.

Breeders can help by being informed about basic genetic principles and good breeding practices.  Know the major genetic diseases in your particular breed.  Be aware of the attitude & practices of your Breed Club.

Orthopedic Foundation for Animals

OFA's objective is to collate and disseminate information concerning orthopedic and genetic diseases of animals.  Areas of concern in OFA's database are:  Hip dysplasia stats, Elbow dysplasia stats, Patellar luxation stats, Cardian, & Thyroid statistics

Penn HIP - University Of Pennsylvania Hip Improvement Program

Penn Hip is the only method for checking the hips in our dogs that we will use.  We feel that it is the most accurate and scientific way to assess hips in dogs.  We love the fact that three different views are used for evaluation.  Our vet, Dr. Haase also provides us with a CD showing all three of these views that we keep in each of our dogs files.  This helps us and is one of the many factors taken into consideration in the decision making process when planning our breeding plans.
