FCI
In 1988 AKDC Officers told KC representatives that they
had heard rumors that ASD followers were attempting to have the breed ASD
recognized by the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) with a totally
different standard. They were
concerned that this would seriously damage the development of the Breed in
Europe
. Mr. Sinnatt (KC Secretary)
replied that any actions by the FCI were of no interest to the KC and would have
no bearing on the situation in
UK
and were therefore not the concern of the AKDC.
An ASD member from
UK
then arranged that dogs she had bred & their offspring would be viewed by
the FCI in order to have the bread recognized by them.
Incredible as it may seem, the FCI failed to follow it’s own criteria
for recognizing a Breed. This
criteria demands that where a new breed is recognized, all information must
originate from the Country of Origin.
The FCI did indeed recognize the ASD as a breed and gave
it a standard based on the dogs viewed (just five) which called for varying coat
lengths, a domed skull (such as the
Pyrenean
Mountain
Dog) and any color. It
is possible that even now, if Turkish Authorities wrote to the FCI and explained
the views from the Country of Origin and how important it is to Turkish people
to have their dogs correctly identified maybe the FCI would listen.
