Colors in Shetland Sheep

Shetalnds have 11 official colors such as white, black, shades of gray,  shades of moorit/brown, and 30 different markings or patterns (photos coming soon).

White

Greys to Black - (listed from light to dark)

Light Grey

Grey

Emsket - dusky bluish-grey

Shaela- dark steely-grey, like black frost

Black

Browns -(listed from light to dark)

Musket - light greyish-brown

Fawn

Mioget-light morrit (yellowish-brown)

Moorit - shades between fawn and dark reddish brown

Dark Brown

                                                                          Markings in Shetland Sheep

1.  Bersugget - Having irregular patches of differing colors.

2.  Bielset - Having a circular band of a different color around the neck.

3.  Bioget - Having a white back and darker sides & belly, or vice-versa.

4.  Blaeget - Having a lighter shade on the outer part of the wool fiber, especially in moorit & dark brown sheep.

5.  Blaget - White with irregular dark patches resembling ground that is partly snow covered.

6.  Blettet - White patches on the nose and top of the head.

7.  Bleset/Sneedled- Dark colored with a white stripe (blaze) down the forehead.

8.  Brandet - Having stripes of another color across the body (i.e. going over the back).

9.  Bronget - Dark colored with light colored breast or vice-versa.

10.  Gulmoget - Having light under parts with a dark colored body.  White inside the ears & under the jaw (the Mouflon pattern, which is also seen on the Soay sheep.)

11.  Katmoget - Having a light colored body with a dark belly & legs.  Has a Moget face.  The reverse of Gulmoget.

12.  Katmollet - Having a light colored nose & jaws.

13.  Kraiget - Having the neck a different color from the rest of the body.

14.  Kranset - Dark colored with white around the eyes & head.

15.  Krunet - Dark colored with a white patch on the top of the head.

16.  Marlit - Various shades of different colors.  Mottled.

17.  Mirkface - White with dark patches on the face.

18.  Moget-faced - Applies to the characteristic face markings of the Katmoget pattern on sheep not otherwise displaying that pattern.

19.  Mullit - White with a dark nose & jaws - the reverse of Katmollet.

20.  Flecket - White with large black or brown patches (not as well defined as in Jacob sheep with in full fleece).

21.  Fronet - Black/brown spotted with a white head & black/brown spots around the eyes.

22.  Ilget - White with spots of a different color (usually grey or black).

23.  Iset - Black or shale with many white fibers, giving a bluish hue from a distance.

24.  Sholmet - Of any color other than white, with a white face.

25.  Skeget - Stripes of different colors on the sides, not going over the back.

26.  Smirslet - White around the mouth, head, or neck.

27.  Snaelit - Light colored body with a snow white face.

28.  Sokket - Has legs of a different color than the body giving the appearance of wearing socks.

29.  Sponget - Dark colored with small white spots.

30.  Yuglet - Having color around the eyes different from the remainder of the body.
